36 new facilitators were trained in South Sumatra in the Learning to Live Together Programme

Paving the way towards ethics education for children and youth in Indonesia, 36 teachers from two schools in South Sumatra province have just become facilitators on the Learning to Live Together (LTLT) Programme, after following a Basic Training Workshop held from 27 to 29 September 2016, in Tanjung Enim city.

Teachers from Bukit Asam Senior High School and Bukit Asam Vocational School were trained on the concepts, resources and methodologies used to implement this intercultural and interfaith programme designed by Arigatou International.

After the two-day workshop, participants gained a better understanding of the educational framework of the LTLT and reflected about ways to customize and adapt the programme to meet the needs of their students.

Some of the daily challenges the children and youth in this part of South Sumatra face are the proximity of the schools to coal mining areas, as well as a hostile environment among locals and immigrants. At the workshop, teachers worked together to design action plans to implement ethics education programs that fit their particular contexts.

“Although the training was carried out within a limited time, the teachers were very enthusiastic”, reported Mr. Fendra Kus Nuryadi, Principal of the Amalina Islamic School in Indonesia and facilitator of this workshop. At the end, teachers expressed their commitment to use the programme in their classrooms to promote values of responsibility, empathy, reconciliation and respect for diversity among their students.

After this positive experience, another Basic Workshop is being planed to take place in Jakarta before the end of this year, to train more facilitators in the implementation of the programme.

Or special appreciation goes to the Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO for their support to make this workshop possible, as well as to Mr. Fendra Kus Nuryadi for his commitment.
