A training of trainers workshop was held in San Lorenzo, Ecuador from 22 – 26 January 2007. The workshop aimed at training participants on how to use the toolkit on ethics education that the Council on Ethics Education for Children is developing.

Twelve participants from Colombia and Ecuador gathered in San Lorenzo, Ecuador to be trained on how to use the toolkit in the context of displacement and migration in the region.

The training workshop lasted for five days and was composed by sessions about the toolkit main areas, how to prepare a workshop and how to run sessions based on the toolkit. The workshop was composed by an on-site training, which was a three-day workshop for children and adults of the region.

Participants of the training learned by participating, how a workshop on ethics education based on the proposed methodologies of the toolkit is developed. They also had the opportunity to visualize how the modules can be used in their own context and the relevance of ethics education to face their social challenges and realities.

The participants of the three-day workshop were Colombian and Ecuadorian parents, young people and children living in San Lorenzo and affected indirectly or directly by the displacement situation.

Parents, children and trainees learned about the importance of understanding and respecting people from different cultures and analyzed the displacement situation from different points of view. They also had the opportunity to discuss ways of solving conflicts that arise from their differences and committed themselves to specific actions they can do to bring peace and mutual understanding to their region.

A visit to one of the local communities near San Lorenzo helped enhancing participant’s awareness about the situation of Colombian and Ecuadorian people living there. It was a good opportunity to put themselves in others’ shoes and to understand the reality of the region.

Ms. Amada Benavides de Perez from Colombia, Ms. Monica de Newton from Ecuador, Rev. Rolando Calle from Ecuador and Maria Lucia Uribe from the Arigatou Foundation in Geneva were the facilitators of the training workshop. Their experience working on ethics education, with children and adults and on methodologies that enhance critical thinking contributed to the success of the workshop.

The training workshop ended with action plans made by the trainees to prepare workshops on ethics education in Ecuador and Colombia based on the toolkit methodologies.  Ms. Mercedes Román, GNRC Coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean thanked the facilitators and participants for their commitment and expressed her satisfaction with the results obtained with the training workshop.

The workshop was the first of a series of training workshops that will happen during this year.  It was also a good opportunity to test the toolkit in a new context and reality.
