Objectives:
Discuss the challenges and opportunities faced by Education Systems in supporting learners to living in an interconnected world ; Reflect on the concepts and values of global citizenship and inclusive education and their integration to the curriculum, teacher training and to school communities at large. ; Identify approaches to strengthen values-based education through engaging different stakeholders.

Ms. Jane Nyaga
Ms. Jane Nyaga is the Assistant Director in the Curriculum Directorate, Secondary Education Department of the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) in charge of Humanities. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Education (Arts in History and philosophy of Religious Studies) from Kenya University and a Master’s degree in Education Administration and Planning from the University of Nairobi. She is pursuing a PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies at the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.
Jane has a background in teaching at the secondary school level for 13 years from 1988 before joining KICD in 2002. She has been trained as a trainer of trainers in Peace Education, Human Rights Based Approach to Programming (HRBAP), Civic Education, Learning to Live Together (LTLT) and Global Citizenship Education (GCED). She has undertaken the Senior Management Leadership Course at the Kenya School of Government, as well as online courses on “Cooperative Games: Enhancing children's participation and collaborative learning“ by Arigatou International and “Cultural Diversity and Intercultural Understanding” by Asia Pacific Centre for International Understanding.
Currently, Jane is the focal person for the GCED Curriculum Integration Project in Kenya running from 2019 – 2021 for the initial phase and mainstreaming in curriculum of the UNESCO General History of Africa (GHA), Inter - Culural Learning & Global Competence Education and Human Rights. She coordinates mainstreaming of the Citizenship Competency in the ongoing curriculum reforms in Kenya and is the Secretary to the Curriculum Reforms Technical Committee of KICD. Her expertise covers development of curriculum and curriculum support materials, evaluation of curriculum support materials, research, orientation and in-service training of teachers and other curriculum implementers.
Ms. Nora Tairi
Ms. Nora Tairi is the Central Inspector of Pedagogy of the Ministry of National Education Algeria. She holds a Master’s degree in Language Sciences, and she is a former Secondary School teacher of English, a teacher trainer and inspector.
Ms. Tairi has completed the course with UNESCO IICBA on ‘Youth Empowerment for Peace and Resilience building and the prevention of violent extremism in Sahel countries through teacher training’ at Hiroshima University, Japan and is the focal point for the project in Algeria.
Mr. Zouhair Safi
Mr. Zouhair Safi holds an MPhil in English and cultural studies. He has extensive experience in teaching at all education levels. From 2008 till 2015, he was involved in a nation-wide school reform project (Schools of The Future) as an instructional leadership coordinator and regional coordinator.
From 2015 till date, Mr. Zouhair Safi has been involved in another reform project at the ministry of education in the United Arab Emirates as Senior Curriculum Expert. He has contributed to the development and implementation of the Moral Education Program, a pioneering initiative in the region which was introduced in 2017. Mr. Safi is also interested in the use of ICT in education. He is a co-founder of a pioneering company: ‘Education4Sight’ where he contributed to the development of a comprehensive analytics software: Edligo.
Mr. Mohamed Hassan Mukhtar
Mohamed Hassan Mukhtar is currently the Director of Curriculum in the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education, Somalia. In 2013 he was a member of the Somali National Curriculum Committee responsible for development of the country's National Curriculum Framework. Under his remit, the national primary and secondary curriculum and textbooks have been developed and rolled out across Somalia.
Currently Mr. Mukhtar’s department is working on curricula and materials for Accelerated Basic Education and Early Childhood Development. Before joining the ministry, he was Dean of the Faculty of Education and a lecturer at Benadir University in Mogadishu. On behalf of Somalia he presented "Best Practices in Harmonizing Accelerated Education Programming" that was held 14th September in UKFIET Conference.
Mr. Mohammad Zahangir Alam
Mohammad Zahangir Alam, Deputy Director (Training and Development) has started his career in 2008 as a Lecturer of Geography and Environment through 27th BCS. In his long government service life, he taught in various renowned Government Colleges in Bangladesh. Before joining the Directorate of Madrasah Education, he was appointed as Assistant Professor in Govt. Sarada sundari Mohila college, Faridpur.
Mohammad Zahangir Alam completed his graduation and post-graduation in Geography and Environment from the University of Dhaka. Besides this, he got plenty of training home and abroad. He is directly involved in preparing 4(Four) running DPP (Detailed Project Proposal) for Madrasah Education. He is also the Focal point of SDG, NIS and UNESCO program of the Directorate of Madrasah Education. Moreover he got the award of National Integrity in 2021 as the best officer of the Directorate of Madrasah Education.
Mohammad Zahangir Alam as a Deputy Director (Training and Development) plays a vital role in Covid-19 situations for keeping the students engaged in education by a program called “AMAR GHORE AMAR MADRASAH” (Live telecast program of classes by Sangsad TV) which was highly appreciated.

Ms. Dorah Kitala
Dorah Kitala is a Principal Education Officer in the Ministry of Education (Kenya) in the Directorate of Policy, Partnerships and East Africa Community Affairs. She holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology and a Degree in Literature and English from Kenyatta University in Nairobi (Kenya). She has great experience in teaching literature in high schools where she has been working for 26 years and also headed the Languages Department and Clubs and Societies.
At the Ministry, Dorah is involved in policy formulation and in the mainstreaming of pertinent and contemporary issues into the curriculum. Currently, she is the Regional Coordinator for Peace Education and the Focal Point for ADEA (Association for the Development of Education in Africa) in the Ministry. She has received training in several Peace Building Programmes including Prevention and Management of Emerging forms of Violence and Violent Extremism (PVE) and in capacity building of stakeholders in peace building. Dorah has also participated in related regional and international conferences.
Ms. Mary Wanjiru Kangethe
Mary Kangethe is currently the Director Education Programme, Kenya National Commission for UNESCO (KNATCOM). She has worked as a secondary school teacher and served as an officer in the Ministry of Education at the local and National levels.
Mary has served as the National Coordinator for Peace education at the Ministry of Education where she led and participated in the designing and implementation of key national peace education activities including development of a policy, integration of peace education into the curriculum, conduct of research, capacity development of teachers and development of peace education materials. She has also led customisation and implementation of various international peace education programmes to the Kenyan context.
Additionally, Mary served as the Coordinator of the Inter Country Quality Node (ICQN) on Peace Education under the Association for Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) up to 2016.
