WISE (Por sus siglas en inglés) es una plataforma internacional, multisectorial para el pensamiento creativo, el debate y la acción propositiva para nuevos enfoques en la educación, lanzado en 2009 por la Fundación Qatar.

INSPIREd Faith Communities in India: Second Roundtable Discussion on Nurturing Values and Spirituality in Early Childhood for the Prevention of Violence

Promoting Learning to Live Together in Latin America and The Caribbean – A Story of Service and Conviction

Ms. Mercedes Román has been a key driving force in the implementation and dissemination of the Learning to Live Together Programme in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) since before it’s conception. She was part of the first group of experts, gathered by Arigatou International in 1998, to work on the launch of the Global Network of Religions for Children (GNRC), and has been working with Arigatou International ever since.

As GNRC Coordinator for Latin America, she conducted several test workshops in the region to try out what was then known as the Ethics Education Toolkit. After the launch of Learning to Live Together, she has conducted countless Facilitator Training Workshops in the region, as well as Europe.

Ms. Román has dedicated her life-work to serve the most vulnerable in our society, and to promote the rights of the child, to contribute to their full and sound development. Nowadays, she is the Senior Advisor for the GNRC in LAC and is also part of the group of experts working in the adaptation of the Learning to Live Together Programme to middle childhood years.

In this interview, she shares about her journey working with children and women in vulnerable situations, and how her family and religious background instilled in her a strong sense of justice, generosity and caring for the most needed members of society.

More than 1,300 Children and Youth Have Been Reached by Learning to Live Together in Tanzania

Following a Facilitator Training Workshop that took place at the end of 2017 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, over 1,300 children and youth from 17 madrasas, primary and secondary schools have been reached by the Learning to Live Together Programme.

During the workshop, 28 teachers and youth mentors who have been working with youth from the Global Network of Religions for Children (GNRC) Peace Clubs were trained on how to use the Learning to Live Together Programme in their schools and organizations. As a result, 900 children aged 12 to 17 have been reached by the systematic implementation of the Programme in 12 schools, and another 400 children have been reached through different activities based on the Programme that have been carried out by their teachers.

Youth Empowerment for Resilience, Peacebuilding and the Prevention of Violent Extremism through Education in the Sahel – A Multilateral Collaboration

In the framework of its collaboration with UNESCO, Arigatou International – Geneva lead a training workshop on how to integrate transformative pedagogies into education systems as a tool for promoting peacebuilding, resilience and the prevention of violent extremism.

The workshop, which was organized from 6 to 10 May 2019, by UNESCO's Multisectoral Regional Office for West Africa (Sahel) and the “Institut de la Francophonie pour l'éducation et la formation” took place in Niamey, Niger, bringing together representatives of the Ministries of Primary and Secondary Education of Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Senegal.

Learning to Live Together Programme implemented in 30 schools in Kenya, as part of a peacebuilding intervention

Since May 2019, teachers in the counties of Baringo and Elgeyo-Marakwet, in Kenya, have been systematically implementing the Learning to Live Together Programme among students from 30 schools, following the Teachers Activity Book developed for the implementation process.

This is the outcome of the 4-days Facilitator Training Workshop help in April 2019, for 64 teachers on the use of the LTLT Programme. The workshop was organized by World Vision Kenya, and KNATCOM, with the technical support of Arigatou International - Geneva.

Programa Aprender a Vivir Juntos se implementa en 30 escuelas en Kenia, como parte de intervención para la construcción de paz

Desde mayo de 2019, los maestros en los condados de Baringo y Elgeyo-Marakwet, en Kenia, han estado implementando sistemáticamente el Programa Aprender a Vivir Juntos entre estudiantes de 30 escuelas, siguiendo el Libro de Actividades para Maestros desarrollado para el proceso de implementación.

Este es el resultado del Taller de Capacitación para Facilitadores de 4 días llevado a cabo en abril de 2019, para 64 maestros, sobre el uso del Programa AVJ. El taller fue organizado por World Vision Kenia y KNATCOM, con el apoyo técnico de Arigatou International - Ginebra.

Protecting Children from Sexual Abuse and Online Exploitation in the Wake of COVID-19: An Open Discussion from Pakistan

The wellbeing of many children around the world has been severely affected as a direct consequence of the measures taken to stop the spread of COVID-19, like the closure of schools and prolonged lockdowns.

The United Nations Secretary-General has reported a global surge in domestic-based violence linked to COVID-19, and calls to helplines in some countries have reportedly doubled. Spending more time on virtual platforms can leave children vulnerable to online sexual exploitation and grooming, as predators look to exploit the COVID-19 pandemic.

With this in mind, Search For Justice – CAN Pakistan, and the Child Protection & Welfare Bureau – Government of the Punjab, hosted an online session on Protecting Children from Sexual Abuse and Online Exploitation, reaching 130 participants.

Interreligious Education an Essential Component of Ethics Education

It is undeniable that our reality has been changed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has affected every aspect of our lives, including the way children are educated. At a time when we are asked to remain physically distant, there is more need than ever to acknowledge our interconnectedness and human interdependency. While “othering” narratives are prevailing due to the fear and insecurity imposed by the virus, the role of education becomes essential in reconnecting children across communities of faith to strengthen the values of pluralism and diversity through dialogue.

Shaping Peace Together - Celebrating the International Day of Peace

Every year, the 21st of September marks the International Day of Peace. Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a universally shared date in which all citizens of the world re-commit to Peace above all and to set aside differences to contribute to building a Culture of Peace. In recognition of the goals of Peace Day a webinar was organized by the Kenya National Commission for UNESCO (KNATCOM), the UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of Kenya (MoEST). The theme of this year's Day of Peace was "Shaping Peace Together".

With Dr. Aram’s words as a reference line for the discussions, the series of webinars titled “Leaders Dialogue – Active Peace Building for Community Cohesion in the Midst of COVID-19” kicked off on Tuesday, 22 July 2020. The Leaders Dialogue aimed at listening to one another and sharing notes from leadership experiences, guided by the premise that leaders multiply leaders. In unprecedented times like the COVID 19 Pandemic or in everyday encounters, such dialogue creates an environment of reflection, mutual learning and recommitment to action, active peacebuilding, and community cohesion.

Online Training on Transformative Pedagogy for Peacebuilding in Southern African Countries

Arigatou International Geneva, together with the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA), held an online workshop of six sessions from 1 to 11 December 2020 on 'Transformative Pedagogy for Peacebuilding.' The workshop aimed at 34 participants from Ministries of Education, Universities, UNESCO National Commissions and UNESCO in Malawi, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Creating Spaces for Children to Reflect about Ethical Issues during the Pandemic

Arigatou International Geneva was invited to facilitate an online workshop for children from Indonesia on “Peace, diversity and solidarity during the pandemic.” The workshop was held on 10 February 2021 and was organized by educators belonging to the UNESCO Associated School Project Network (ASPnet) and several other partners.

The webinar aimed to help children become more aware of how they can respond to the social reality of the pandemic by focusing on peace, appreciation of diversity and fostering a sense of solidarity. Children took an active role in the organization and coordination of this webinar. They led the ice breakers and supported the facilitation of the session.

Higher Education Teachers from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia Get Trained on Transformative Pedagogy for Peace and Resilience Building and Prevention of Violent Extremism

A second round of the advanced online training of trainers on “Design and Delivery”for higher education teachers was held on 15 – 18 February 2021. This time, the workshop was carried out in French and Arabic language, reaching 25 participants from the northern African countries of Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia.

These online workshops are being organized together with the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA), in the framework of the Higher Education on Peace and Resilience Building and Prevention of Violent Extremism project.

The online module “SOLIDARITY: An ethical imperative for advancing the role of education in migrant and refugee inclusion in Europe," kicked off on 17 March 2021, gathering 98 participants from Europe and beyond.

Under the title "The role of education in promoting learning to live together among migrant, refugee and host communities in Europe," this first session aimed at building a dialogue on the role of education in strengthening coexistence and interconnectedness between people from different backgrounds, and to promote learning to live together among migrant, refugee and host communities in Europe.

The collaborative project “Creating a Culture of Encounter - Empowering Youth through Education to Challenge Xenophobia, Discrimination and Exclusion in Europe,” took off in September 2021 with a partner’s meeting in Lisbon. The project, which seeks to reach 100 young people from Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain, aims to empower and enable youth to become agents of transformation in their communities.
