Ending legalised violence against children -11 January 2011

Hitting people is wrong – and children are people too. Corporal punishment of children breaches their fundamental rights to respect for their human dignity and physical integrity. Its legality breaches their right to equal protection under the law. Urgent action is needed in every region of the world to respect fully the rights of all children – the smallest and most fragile of people. This report reviews law and policy in relation to corporal punishment and deliberate humiliation of children throughout the world. It makes recommendations for law reform and other measures which it is hoped will be adopted and pursued urgently, at national, regional and international levels, in the context of follow-up to the UN Secretary-General’s Study on Violence against Children.

From Commitment to Action -4 January 2011

Following the United Nations Study on Violence againt Children, Religions for Peace and Unicef initiated an inter-religious reflection and dialogue that led to the 2006 "Multi-religious Commitment to Confront Violence against Children" (the Kyoto Declaration). The Kyoto Declaration is a testament to the shared recognition of the inherent dignity and value of children. It also calls all religious communities to join in an alliance to protect and promote the well-being of children.

La réalisation des droits de l’enfant, celle, notamment, de son droit d’être protégé, suppose un mouvement d’envergure mondiale: désormais, il ne suffit plus simplement de reconnaître et de comprendre les devoirs de la société envers les enfants, mais d’agir pour traduire ces convictions en actes. Les parlements et leurs membres peuvent être les meilleurs champions de la protection de l’enfant; mieux, ils le doivent. Ils peuvent légiférer, superviser l’action du gouvernement et allouer des ressources financières; et comme responsables nationaux et notables locaux, ils peuvent attirer l’attention sur des questions importantes et sensibiliser l’opinion.

Pawns of politics Children, conflict and peace in Northern Uganda -11 January 2011

For more than a decade, World Vision has worked with the communities in northern Uganda to help them cope with the impacts of war. At World Vision’s Children of War Centre in Gulu, children who escape from captivity under the Lord’s Resistance Army are helped to return home and rebuild their lives through psychosocial counselling, healthcare, education and vocational training. In the camps for displaced persons, food, water and shelter only begin to address the needs of millions of families forced from their homes. We can give blankets to night commuters, but we also need to end the fear that drives them to leave home. The insecurity and costs of this war for everyone over the years is a price that is too high to pay

Constituye para mi una gran satisfacción poder presentar el "Proyecto Educativo, Promocional y Pastoral a favor de Muchachos y Muchachas en situació de dificultad". La Red Muchachos Situaciones con DOn BOsco (MDB) se ha ido consolidando poco a poco. Ha marcado un estilo y un ritmo de trabajo que se caracteriza simpre por ejecutar cada acción en el momento adecuado y con la intensidad adecuada. Los laicos y salesianos que Ilevn adelante este royecto son conscientes de que cuando se trata de educación de los jóvenes no se puede improvisar, hemos de saber lo que se quiere y a dóonde se pretende Ilevar al educando. El Proyecto Educativo es el instrumento que asegura que la red de MDB implementa líneas educativas comunes, respetando la particularidad de cadra centro.

Millions of children around the world are sexually exploited and abused. Children from poor countries as well as rich, boys as well as girls, face the threat of sexual abuse or exploitation. No region or country is immune. An estimated 2 million children globally are exploited in the commercial sex trade; more than a million children are trafficked for all purposes each year. Children who are trafficked are extremely vulnerable to sexual abuse and exploitation. ese figures speak to a massive failure of protection for children.

Statment Children affected by Armed Conflict -12 January 2011

Over the last decade, 2 million children have been killed in conflict situations, over 1 million have been made orphans, over 6 million have been seriously injured or permanently disabled and over 10 million have been left with grave chological trauma. Today, conflicts tend to affect an increasing number of children. Attacks are generally indiscriminate and children regularly become the strategic target of belligerents, as the enemy is defined through "ethnicity". A dramatic situation, which increases with the number and length of wars - wars waged by adults, where children are always the first and weakest victims.

The Child Labour Problem -11 January 2011

The Child Labour Problem. Issues and Solutions is the most recently published number of Defence for Children's Monitor. This number, dedicated to the child labour issue, is published at the time of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of DCI. It is an outcome of the cooperation of DCI with IREWOC, the Foundation for International Research on the Exploitation of Working Children. The book presents articles with different views on child labour policy ranging from proponents of a respectful approach to children's decision to work towards proponents of the total eradication of child labour. It also contains some articles that give insight into special cases of working children.
