Institute of Religious Studies - University of Montreal

The mission of the Institute of Religious Studies (IER) of the University of Montreal is to study religions and the experience of belief, past and present, in their diversity and complexity. It is not only a question of describing, but above all of analyzing and critically interpreting the religious and spiritual heritage of humanity.

In the context of the construction/deconstruction of university knowledge, the IRE combines, in a complementary way, the contribution of the sciences of religions, theology, and studies in spirituality. These three disciplinary fields adopt specific research postures that produce mutually fruitful results. At the IER, these three disciplines have a hermeneutic, discursive and contextual sensitivity with the concern for the practical repercussions of the transformation of the world.
